Control Pests This Winter

November 11, 2019

After months of relentless heat, you may start to be relying on your heat as temperatures begin to fall. It’s the time of year that pests will be on the lookout for an inside place to create a shelter; why stay outside in dropping temperatures when there is warm, safe shelter inside? Don’t let your home welcome in pests this season. Below are a few tips to help you fend off critters.

Make Sure Areas Are Sealed

This doesn’t just include common entryways like doors or windows. Even a tiny hole in your foundation or wall is enough for a determined mouse to make its way inside. Closing off these areas can better protect you against eager pests looking for a place to stay this winter.

Keep Firewood Stacked Away from Your Home

This, of course, only applies to those that have a wood-burning fireplace. Wood piles are a common shelter for mice, so if your wood piles are kept too close to your home, the mice will be able to tell that there is a warmer, cozier place to set up shop in just around the corner. This also applies to any bugs or insects that may be living inside or around your wood piles.

Store Food Properly

As food availability outside starts to decrease, pests will be forced to find nourishment elsewhere. In many cases, that leads directly to residential homes. Don’t let pests get the chance to find an easy meal in your home. Storing opened food items in pantries or resealable containers to always a good idea. You should also keep your trash covered once it has been taken outside; trash is a welcome meal for mice and other pests.
